bal harbour · japanese

The most polished sushi experience in Miami. Makoto sits inside the Bal Harbour Shops and somehow pulls it off without feeling mall-adjacent. The omakase counter is intimate, the wagyu dishes are absurd in the best way, and the spicy tuna crispy rice is genuinely one of the best bites in the city. Go for the counter if you can get it.

must have: spicy tuna crispy rice, wagyu tataki

north miami · japanese

A no-frills lunch counter that quietly became a local legend. Erika runs the place herself, the fish is always fresh, and the prices make no sense given the quality. Cash only, limited hours, and worth every bit of the effort it takes to get there. If you have not been, you are missing out on one of Miami's best-kept secrets.

must have: salmon sashimi, yellowtail roll

south miami · japanese

South Miami's neighborhood sushi spot, and one of the most consistent restaurants in the city. The room is unpretentious, the fish is excellent, and the chirashi is a weekly ritual for locals who know. It does not try to be anything it is not, and that is exactly why it works. The kind of place you take out-of-towners when you want to actually impress them.

must have: chirashi, salmon skin hand roll

tue through fri, 11:30am to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to 10pm · closed mondays

edgewater · modern japanese

The Austin-born restaurant group brought their version of modern Japanese to Miami and it landed well. The vibe is cool without being annoying about it, the omakase-style tasting menu is one of the better ways to spend a Thursday night, and the bar program does not disappoint. Best suited for a date or a group that actually wants to share everything.

must have: hama chili, machi cure

south beach · japanese

A South Beach institution that has been around long enough to have real regulars. Toni's is the kind of sushi spot that does not need to reinvent itself because it has always been good. The fish is fresh, the rolls are solid, and the outdoor seating on a good night is genuinely one of the nicer ways to eat in Miami Beach. A reliable anchor in a neighborhood full of noise.

must have: yellowtail jalapeno, tuna tartare

daily, 5:30pm to 11pm

south of fifth · omakase

The Miami outpost of the Tokyo original, tucked into the Stanton Hotel on Ocean Drive. The basement omakase counter is the main event: intimate, precise, and the kind of meal you think about for a while after. Book the omakase and let the chef run it.

must have: omakase counter, uni nigiri
